( Kalkan - Kaş ) Pinara
The name Pinara has survived, assimilated to the Turkish word for 'minaret' , in the village of Minare half an hour below the ruins. The village is easily accessible via a short road that branches off the main Fethiye-Kas Highway. Climbing up from the village, the visitor's eye is rust caught by a great round mass of rock which seems to have given Pinara its name. In fact, Pinara means 'round' in the Lycian language Pinara can be reached from the main highway between Fethiye and Kalkan, about 17 km northwest of Xanthos. The highway is marked by a Pinara signpost near the town of Eşen. Turn off the highway and continue to the town of Minare (about 4 km) until you come to the Pinara signpost indicating a left turn. Continue on to the site (2 km). The road up to Pinara is much better than it was few years ago. Pinara was a large ancient city of Lycia at the foot of Mount Cragus (now Mount Babadağ), and not far from the western bank of the River Xanthos, homonymous with the ancient city of Xanthos (now Eşen Stream). |
